Tottenham 3 Arsenal 3: It’s the Hope That Kills Ya

I wanted to win this game so badly before kickoff. I just wanted the players to leave their blood, sweat and tears all over the pitch. I got the sweat, but not the result. With Chelsea beating Birmingham today, it leaves Arsenal in 3rd place. Disappointing, but the performance from the team showed heart and

The game started as if the players had been shot out of a cannon and it barely let up for the entire first half. Both teams looked up for it and started with fervor and bold tackles. There was barely any time gone before the first goal came. Theo got a lovely pass in behind the Tottenham defense and Theo held his run perfectly to beat the offside trap. He found himself taking on Gomes and coolly slot it past him to put the Arsenal one-nil up. I know it’s a bit cliche to say this, but Theo’s finish had echoes of a certain other number 14 of Arsenal past.

Before the game reached the fifteen minute mark, the score would already read 2-1 to the Arsenal. Tottenham responded quickly after Theo’s strike. It was a great strike from van der Vaart who beat Szczesny at his near post to equalize. You would think Wojo would have covered it better, but Diaby provided little help by not getting tighter to vdV and denying him the time and space to get the shot off. Arsenal hit back a few minutes later. RvP had a great chance saved by Gomes and we got the goal just moments later. Diaby found Nasri who was about 20 yards out and in plenty of space. He hit a smooth, clean strike straight past Gomes. It was a fantastic finish to put us ahead in the game.

The game was end-to-end and played at a frantic pace. Tottenham were content with a more direct route, playing several long balls up to Crouch, but also trying to exploit the wings and knock in crosses from out wide to cause havoc in our penalty area. Whenever they got a sniff at goal they would shoot. Many of their attempts came from outside the penalty area and we were letting them have too many of those chances by not closing them down fast enough. Arsenal’s passing game wasn’t as smooth as in most games, but we were running high on adrenaline and playing with some grit. Theo was doing particularly well getting forward and drifting inside. In the 27th minute he tried a shot from out wide that just barely missed and went wide of the post. In the middle of the pitch, we weren’t holding onto possession well, but neither was Tottenham, which made things a bit scrappy between the two sides. Tackles were flying in and both teams were desperate to get forward to find another goal.

We had another breakthrough nearly five minutes before halftime. Gallas failed to clear the ball from his penalty box and Theo was right there to pounce and pick it up before it went out for a corner. He got it across the goal to van Persie who headed it towards goal. Gomes saved, but RvP was there for the rebound and made it 3-1. As if it would have ended there. You barely had time to catch your breath before Tottenham struck again to deflate gooner hearts. I don’t know why, but teams seem to score ridiculous wonder goals against us all the time. Today it was Tom Huddlestone’s turn when he caught a shot off the half-volley that soared into our goal to keep the Spuds chances alive. The half ended 3-2 and you could sense there would be more coming in the second half.

The second 45 minutes were just as wide open and end-to-end as the first. We got a couple of early bookings for Song and Djourou and Tottenham were looking to come at us as quickly as they could. They got an early chance when van der Vaart stepped up to take a free kick from the foul Djourou picked up a booking for, but his shot went over the bar. There were too many holes between our defense and midfield at times and I think that was our main problem. We didn’t keep it tight enough at the back and sometimes our more forward players didn’t get back quick enough to help defend.

On the other end of the pitch, RvP actually did get the ball in the net, but he was ruled offside. I thought he was clearly onside, though would Gomes have tried more to save it if he hadn’t heard the whistle? Possibly. I did think the call was incorrect, but I will have to look at the replay when I get a chance. We had another great opportunity when Theo burst forward with the ball, but instead of shooting, he cut back and attempted to set up Cesc who pulled out because he was offside. It was a massive opportunity that we didn’t take.

The Spuds managed to grab their equalizer before we got to further our lead. Lennon made his way into our box and didn’t have any defender tracking him. Why? I couldn’t tell you. Szczesny decided to come off his line to get the ball but managed to take out Lennon instead. Stonewall penalty. It was van der Vaart who stepped up and he put the ball in the back of the net for his second goal of the night. We had 20 minutes left to find the winning goal and Tottenham were not rolling over. Not only that, but we were running out of steam. Tottenham hadn’t played over the weekend, but we had, and you could see that little bit of difference in our energy levels.

Britain Soccer Premier League

Hearts were in mouths when Tottenham almost put themselves ahead right after their penalty when Modric took a close shot. Szczesny had been making great saves all night, and he saved Modric’s shot with his legs. We found ourselves with a good chance moments later when Cesc lashed a shot from outside the area, but Gomes tipped it over the bar. Szczesny made another great save when Crouch got a header on target. There were shots coming in from everywhere at both ends of the pitch. It was anyone’s game at this point. Bendtner and Arshavin came on in the last ten minutes of the game, a bit late in my opinion. Both teams were trying to find the winning goal, but nothing came. We had a couple of late shots, but like most of the season, our shots were not particularly threatening or off-target. If there’s a lesson in this season for Arsenal, it would be that efficiency in front of goal needs to improve because that seems to be worse than our defending at times. Three minutes of extra time were added, but the score stayed 3-3. It was a result that we could have avoided. We needed three points to keep the pressure on United, but we yet another draw. It’s not over for us. Unfortunately, this season won’t die with a swift bullet to the head, but in a slow and agonizing fashion where faint hopes will glimmer and slowly fade into the distance.

Player Ratings:

Szczesny 6.5 We saw the best of Wojo and the worst of Wojo. He’s never been hesitant to come off his line, but if he’s going to do that, then he has to be sure about getting the ball or at least blocking the shot. It isn’t the first time he’s mistimed a challenge, and we got the penalty called against us today. Not only that, but he got beaten at his near post for the Huddlestone goal. On the other hand, he came up with some tremendous saves and had safe hands throughout the match. He also has a punch that brings a tear to my eye whenever he clears from a corner. He also came out and went in on a couple 50-50s with Bale, which were totally epic. Did he save us a point or lose us two? I’m still on the fence. This was a tough one to mark.

Sagna 7.5 I thought he dealt really well with Bale and was one of the most motivated players on the pitch. There were times when there was too much space between him and our other defenders and the opposition was able to get in a cross a bit too easy, but overall I thought he did a good job. Got back with some great tackles and interceptions.

Djourou 6 One of his weaker games. I don’t think he looked as commanding as he had been in previous games and sometimes I wondered where he was when I saw a Tottenham player in space or winning a header.

Koscielny 6.5 Along with Djourou, not his greatest, but I did remember several solid moments from him coming out from the back and holding off players near the byline. At the end of the day, we conceded three goals, and some of that needs to lay at the feet of our central defense.

Clichy 6.5 I don’t think Clichy is nearly as bad as everyone says, but he does have those moments where he lets a player get past him, or he doesn’t step up quickly enough to play offside. Still, I think his display today was decent and he could do with Nasri getting back to help out defensively a bit more.

Song 7 Solid if not spectacular. He added that bit of toughness we needed in the midfield, though he looked less than 100% fit.

Diaby 6.5 His physical presence was an asset in the middle. However, he should be getting back to help out defensively better than he was and there were some loose passes here and there. He also made a terrible challenge on Modric which was like a scissor from behind. He didn’t get booked, but it was at least a yellow, and maybe a red; the type of tackle I fume at when it’s made on our players.

Fabregas 8 If only he had scored with one of his shots, Theo van Nasregas would have finally gotten on the scoresheet and we would have won the game. He played with heart and commitment. I don’t know how much ground he covered, but I saw him popping up everywhere. Technically, not the greatest from him, but can’t fault his efforts at all.

SOCCER-ENGLAND/

Walcott 9 MOTM I thought he looked fantastic at times today. He made some great runs and played the offside trap well. Apart from a couple of iffy moments, it was a great game. I am really excited to see him play the centre forward role in the future. He continues to grow into his game more and more.

Nasri 7 Got on the scoresheet and hopefully he will bag a few more before the end of the season. His form has tapered in recent games, but he was trying today. He had a determination about him, though he could have been more incisive in the final third at times.

van Persie 7.5 Continued his wonderful goal-scoring form for the Arsenal by netting yet again today. He did well in dropping deep when Theo pushed forward and I saw him making better runs into the box as opposed to Sunday.

Subs:

Wilshere 6.5 Came on not in the 52nd minute for Diaby. Started off a bit slow, but worked his way into it. It’s obvious he’s lost a bit of edge in recent games, but that’s understandable for a player his age that has played the number of games he has in his first full season.

Arshavin N/A Didn’t have enough time on the pitch to merit a rating, but I did see him track back, so credit there.

Bendtner N/A Like Arshavin, wasn’t on long enough for a rating. It would be nice to see him played up top instead of on the wing though, especially when he comes on as a sub and we’re looking for a goal.

I’ll probably have tomatoes thrown at me for saying this, but we are still in this title race. Don’t ask me how because I haven’t the faintest idea. All I know is that we sit in third place, level on points with Chelsea, and six points behind Manchester United. We could even end up level on points with Chelsea and United at the end of the season with only goal difference separating us. If we step back for a second and look at today’s result in context, it’s actually not bad. A draw, away from home, and at our biggest rival. We didn’t lose the league here. If we do lose the league, it’s because of our home record, not our away record. Am I disappointed right now? Hell yes! I wish we were on top of the table with room to spare. What I am not is filled with the kind of anger and vitriol I’ve seen pointed towards Wenger and our players. We can look back on everything that went wrong once the season is over. You can start trudging out the talking points about all of the failures in this squad, but I’d rather focus on the fact that we have five games left and the players need us now more than ever. We might think it’s impossible to win the league, but the players can’t. They have to fight to win every game from here until the end of the season. What I saw today was fight. The adrenaline probably made them play a bit on edge and rattle their composure, but you cannot honestly tell me they didn’t try to go and win that game. We have Bolton on Sunday. No time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have games to play.

We have faced two problems all season which should be food for thought for management in the off season.
How to break down a stubborn defence that's playing for a draw and retreats into the last third of the field and how to hold on to a lead when we get one.
Would it have hurt us to adopt a more defensive posture when we were 2 up? Take off Nasri or even Fab and play with three defensive midfielders.
When we are facing a dogged defence we need more options such as playing someone like Bendtner centrally and playing the ball forward quickly.
Now this is pretty obvious stuff but we seem very slow to adapt to changing condition.
We are very predictable. Anyone want to bet that MU don't look to crowd the midfield and make it difficult for our passing game and then look to hit us hard on the break?

Posting late in the day so no one ever reads my drivel but the one thing that I keep reading or hearing from supporters, reporters, pundits & ex-pros is about our lack of mental strength, leadership & quality centre backs. Cesc was reported the other day affectively critisising the direction of the club. Regardless of the outcome to the rest of the season, this squad needs some tweaking & I've a firm belief that the single most damaging element is our captain. He's our most creative player & clearly unlocks doors but for me, the price is to high. I actually disagree with sairax. The guy works when he fancies it & not often. Has no one else noticed how much he jogs back when we defend. It's exactly the same as gerrard for Liverpool(does it once or twice a game, gets remembered but mostly doesn't bother). Arshavin rightly gets critisised for this but at least he plays wide & has spent most of his years as a forward. Cesc plays centre of the park. In an advanced role yes but still essentially centre mid. We are set up exactly the same way as barca. Barca to a man try to win the ball back. That's why it works. Yesterday for the first time I actually felt Diaby finally 'gets it' up & down hassling opponents, getting a foot in then getting close in support of team mates in possession. That was barca way from a guy who has come in for plenty of stick. Cesc laboured and actually didn't cover much grass at all. The way we play, we need everyone to work hard defensively to smoother the ball or it doesn't work. We won hardly anything in that 2nd half in the centre of the park when diaby went off yet the guy who's frustrated at his club & team mates stayed on without an understanding of how little an affect he was having towards defending(our greatest weakness). He didn't make any obvious mistakes. He was never close to being in a position to make any. Centre of the park, captain & understandably showing annoyance prior to the game about our deficiencies but then does nothing to rectify them. He needs to go! This team may lose it's most creative player but will continue to have others. A defensive weak link leading this particular team is a huge 'no no'. Barca would struggle defensively with him in the centre of the park assuming he puts in the same effort or 'concern'. I understand there are other culprits but this is our leader. A guy who also gave the ball away so often yesterday but deemed untouchable resulting in far better performers on the day(Diaby, Nasri) coming off. I've never been surer that, if cesc goes it will only be beneficial to our chances of becoming a winning side(even if we are minus a great passer).

  • Chris

I do think Diaby had a decent game, and upped his work rate to hassle their players. But Spurs did play an excellent game and what impressed me (can't believe I'm saying this about THEM) was that they were constantly onto us, suffocating any movement on the ground. How many times did we see at least one, probably two Spurs players in our faces, closing us down and basically preventing us from playing. Our players were doing 360° trying to escape from the straight-jacket the Spurs players were putting around us. This caused us to play high-balls (never a strong point with our smaller than average players), or having to thread passes, which often got cut out , losing possession. They got their tactics right, and it's something I rarely see Arsenal players doing, since we tend to back off, back off and then give away a long-range shot which takes us by surprise... (Huddlestone goal ?) So on your "working hard defensively" point, I agree, we need more collective participation in defending. How many times do we see Rooney tracking back to defend, and even Drogba gets stuck in.

Far from convinced, however, that seeing Cesc go would actually improve the team... Although I do not consider he is an ideal choice of captain, when he is on form he brings so much creativity and stability to mid-field. Keep Cesc, but pass the arm-band to someone else (and TV5 is the only current candidate I can think of). Yet IMO Wenger hasn't shown himself to be the greatest at choosing a captain in recent years (Gilberto, Gallas, Almunia even Henry, who should have been left to focus on banging in goals, not marshalling the other 10 players on the pitch). We need to go back to Paddy and Adams to find the last talismanic Arsenal captains. And by coincidence, that was back to another era when we seemed to be winning everything.

  • Lorient

Hum, I will have to disagree on that one. A captain is nothing more than a symbolic figure that in modern football can be depicted as a man who posses leadership skill, but doesn't have to act as a supreme leader... As long as the ''captain'' chosen is well regarded by his teammate, he doesn't need to be a incontestable leader. As such, when Van Persi got mad agaisnt Diaby the other day because he had picked a yellow, this showed the shared responsability of leadership in the team (or a lack of commitment from Fabregas?)

Anyway, my point is that Arsenal problems are tactical, organizational, it takes more than a superb captain to win you title

  • Chicago Gunner

I think the problem with Arsenal is that the team consists mostly of players who are small, play a finesse game and lack grit, which leaves them vulnerable to injury, especially in this league, which is known for being very physical. Of course every team has injuries, but from reading this blog, Arsenal seems especially prone. If Arsenal had more size and more grit, maybe they would have had fewer starters miss games due to injuries, which would mean more points in the standings. For example, 7amkickoff posted an article earlier this year comparing Robin Van Persie to other top strikers in the league in terms of games played and demonstrated that he misses significantly more games than the rest. The season is a marathon and I think most of Arsenal's players are physically incapable of withstanding the grind. In addition, the conventional wisdom throughout the league is that Arsenal can be beaten with physical play and we've seen that is true on too many occasions.

  • sofreshnsoclean

this season is giving me a heart attack...I'm a TORONTO sports fan and I still feel like this has been the most frustrating season. We can't deny our talent, that's for sure, but maybe it's the mental element. I, like many others, think the league is out of reach, but we still have a LOT to play for...finishing strong, and beating united, will really boost the morale of the players going into next season. Regardless of what happens, it's been one hell of a season. I think this has been the most entertaining season for gooners (due to both good and bad results) in a while...

The way I look at it, we've got our casillas, we've got the best english prospect in the world in jack, we've got the best one before him (theo) coming into the level we expected of him and is probably the one guy other teams prepare for most tactically, and we've got effin samir nasri. We're so close, and the rest of the league knows it...just a few more changes and some leadership, and we'll have a lot more ups than downs.

Few things in life provide enjoyment more than Arsenal supporters frustrated. May Wenger continue at Emirates as manager to provide many more seasons of Arsenal frustrations.

  • I've been working crazy hours at work so didn't get to see it, but it sounds like it's just as well. Sigh . . . can't wait for a summer of "Cesc to Barcelona?" and "6 years with no trophies" stories...

  • Sairax

It was a crazy game. I think it was all played really frantically and on adrenaline. I think that may have played into some of our defensive problems. Anyway, it was a classic for the neutral I'm sure.

  • Patoux21

Sagna rated at 7.5 and one of the best Gunner yesterday? Sagna being right back of the season in the PL is a joke. He was constantly lacking composure and looked very unsecure every time he had the ball like he was scared of having it. Several times he made very poor passes at the back which would have been very costly and his crossing is still terrible. He's very limited technically. And if you look at penalty awarded it's at least 70% his fault when he left Lennon run behind him I don't know what exactly he was trying to do in this play. I also was not surprised when there was a 1-2 pass and run and see Arshavin let his man run and he was walking looking at him going forward. Overall the Spurs deserved to win the game as they totally dominated the second half.

  • Patoux, I'm starting to think that you're either (a) Eboue, and jockeying for playing time by slandering Sagna; or (b) the kid that Sagna pushed off the swing set in 2nd grade...

  • Patoux21

I just think that people are a bit blind about Sagna actual football level. He's better than Eboue defensively no doubt about that but he's so limited technically and tactically that he's never going to be a reliable right back imo. I just hate when there's nobody defending in his side when he's too busy (trying) attacking.
Like I said before he's not enough of a threat offensively so he better stay in defense and guard his man and help the centre halves.
He's playing for the French national team and I can tell you most people think that there are better players that could play in his position.

  • But to the extent that you're criticizing him for not staying back on defense . . . that's obviously on Wenger and the coaching staff, not on him. He's playing the role he's supposed to play, so I can see no way in which it's fair to criticize him for that.

And as for not being enough of a threat offensively, well, I'm not sure what you really want him to do. I think he's gotten to be a decent enough crosser of the ball, but when every attacking player we have is under 5'10 and never runs into the box anyway, well, it's pretty much irrelevant. Other than that the job of the fullbacks in our system seems mainly just to overlap and provide an outlet out wide to stretch the defense out a bit, and he does that fine.

I'm a huge Sagna fan, but you say it's a "joke" that he was in the team of the year -- tell me who is better? I grant that it's not a great era for right backs in England at the moment, but with Ivanonvic mainly playing in the middle now for Chelsea, I can't think of anyone who I would even consider taking over Sagna.

  • Patoux21

TBH I can't really tell about any other right back that I think is better than Sagna since I rarely watch other teams playing apart from the other big guns ManU, Chelsea and maybe some others. In those teams I could probably say Rafael might be already at the same level as Sagna and is going to be a futur great player, Boswingua used to be pretty good before but I think since his injury he hasn't found his level back.
But still Sagna is an average player in a league with very few right backs on top level.
When you look at the left back position Ashley Cole is by far the best in the league and he's really a top player even though I don't really like him but can't deny his talent.

Yes she did. But it was your mother that provided the sex.

  • Orion_saidwiseguy

  • Mrs Orions sperm donor

Thank you. Your mum said you were well mannered. She also said you had a fetish for being spanked by gay black men. Each to his own. Fibreglass will definetly be leaving you this summer. This season was your last opportunity to keep him. All down hill from here. As so many of your own supporters have pointed out, the Arse have zero backbone.

  • For the past 4 games or so, we've kept telling ourselves that if we don't win, we're out of the race, well we've only won one out of those games, so let's just stop fooling ourselves. I'm the eternal optimist, but in this case, it gets more frustrating after each game. Nice game against the Spuds tho, but if Arsenal has taught me one thing, it's never to have the audacity to hope.

  • This team is just one massive heart break this season. Every single chance we've had to "show our worth" we've thrown away. Its so sad to continue watching this happen, match in and match out. I feel sorry to say, but I don't trust my team with a 4 goal cushion with 20 minutes left to play.

  • Homey_Mills

Yeah, I think we have to admit that we're a bunch of chokers. I'm not going to call for the heads of the manager and all the players. And I'm not going to choose another team to pull for. But it's just the facts. And Sairax, please... don't tell me we're in the race. I can't even remember winning two games in a row, because it's been so long. Just wake me up when it's the summer transfer window. And yes, I know we won't do squat in that either, but at least it will be fun to talk about.
I dunno how much I'll have the stomach to be a regular commenter on this blog until the season ends. It's just so putrid right now. I'll be back though. Not picking another team or anything.

  • It's pretty frustrating. Obviously Arsenal is a very good team with some great players, beat Barcelona, cup final blah blah blah, but there is something basic at the core of the team that is not working over and over again. I don't think it's as simple as bring in a new manager or a couple players. There just seems to be a huge mental weakness in the team. When Arsenal click, they are unstoppable, but too often we shut off and give goals to the other team like candy. It's basic errors, lack of communication and the annoying thing is that it's not just one or two players. It's the whole team. If Eboue didn't give away that penalty against Liverpool, it would have been someone else. It's like we're on a merry-go-round of who is going to shut off and cost us the game this week. Maybe Arsene will hire a witch doctor in the summer to get rid of whatever curse seems to be following us, or maybe we can get a doctors note to just skip February and March next year, since that is when our season ALWAYS falls apart.

  • Sairax

Well, like I said, the players have to believe it more than the fans. In any case, I hope everyone can find some way to enjoy the remaining games even if we don't win the league. And I know you'll come back. You always do ;)

  • Mad Mike

That's it. The gunners can't hold on to a lead. Even with a ten goal cushion ,theey are unlikely to kill the disease that is affecting the team.
I think Wenger doesn't know or want to protecta two goal cushion. Other teams could have played anti soccer and won it. But not the high priest/Brahmin of attacking soccer. Arsenal are going to suffer.

  • FredJacob

Imagine if Chelsea comes back and win the league

  • Sairax

They can't. I already said at the beginning of the season they wouldn't and I want bragging rights! lol

  • Not sure we can win the championship, but I am backing the team to the end. No point in me saying what should be done, on tactics etc etc, because if i was so good, I'd be playing and coaching, instead I'm here on a blog!

The least we can do is try urge the boys on, they are not in a great moment, and in our families, we don't laugh at those who are down, we put them on our shoulders and guide them the best we can. We need to let the team know we are still here, then hope they respond.

Keep some positivity until Game 38!

  • I'm pretty sure the majority of those of us who are ranting or showing frustration are still going to support the squad until the end. No one is bailing on them, but you cannot fault a single person for venting or showing their frustration with this team and their absolute affinity to not being able to close out big matches.

  • Georgedb1

    couldn't agree more

  • Gooners gorn again

Nah, fuckem. Take them to the town sq and floggem, then deport the cheating foreign bastards. As for Spurs, but them another pint, they deserve it.

  • I'd throw tomatoes at you regardless of saying that or not. I dislike Tomatoes immensly!

  • Sairax

    Fair enough ;)

  • impressive performance, but should have won, honestly. well looks like out of the , if so, then we wont let Man U get the title at Emirates. it will be humiliating, just like what happened 2 years ago after manu trahed us out of the champs league semis.

but fingers crossed, if spurs can upset manu, and by time we come back to 2nd place (hopefully), cuz manu has chelsea and everton to play too..

    -Fingers Crossed

bad result but what a game of football ,you couldnt take you eyes off it for a split second!
forget rangers celtic ,barca madrid boca river plate ,the commitment and desire in that game was outstanding .
just one grumble tho ,the spuds second goal ,it resulted from a throw in which should have been our free kick in the box when bail clatterd into our keeper after all if he hadnt got to the ball it would have been a pen wouldnt it!
