Transfer Rumors + Hartson Update

By: Martin | August 19th, 2009

Sigh. More transfer rumors today. I have to say, I like it so much better when the window is closed and we don’t have to deal with all this nonsense every day. But it’s out there, so let’s dive right in.

First, there are reports that Arsenal and Barcelona have agreed on a deal to sell Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona for a fee of €35 million. Supposedly if Arsenal don’t make the Champions League (i.e., if Celtic somehow knock us out next week), the transfer will go through before the end of August, but if we do, which in all likelihood we will, the transfer won’t go through until next summer. This is, obviously, quite alarming, and I’ll be pretty upset if it’s true. But I would say this—it was apparently initially reported by the Spanish media, which has all the credibility of a Magic 8-ball and often serves as a mouthpiece for the clubs themselves, planting rumors that are to the club’s advantage. At the moment, Barcelona fans are probably pretty nervous, given that archrival Real Madrid have done so much to improve this summer and Barca has only swapped Eto’o for Ibrahimovic. So Barca’s president Joan Laporta and manager Pep Guardiola are under pressure at the moment, and if they can convince the fans that they have made this blockbuster move for the future, it might give them a bit of respite. I’ve said it 20-30 times over the summer, and I’ll say it again—I just don’t really believe it. I don’t believe Cesc would bail on Arsenal, Wenger, the fans, and his teammates when the team is on the brink of achieving great things, and I don’t think he’s the kind of player who would agree to join another club and then play an entire season with his present club. It’ll be interesting to see if the club, the boss, and/or Cesc issue a denial about this today—in the past, denials have generally been forthcoming immediately after these types of reports, so if nothing comes out today, that might be a sign that there’s actually something to this.

PSV Eindhoven and Hungarian international winger Balazs Dzsudzsak (how do you pronounce THAT?) has claimed that Arsenal have made a formal bid for his services. With my usual caveat about not being a scout and never having seen him play, he’s young (22) and his goal-scoring record (11 goals in 32 league games for PSV last season; 3 goals in just 3 league games this season) is impressive for a winger. Vermaelen, our recent young Eredivisie import, hasn’t taken too much time to settle into the Premiership and has adapted well, so maybe Holland is a good place to look for undervalued talent. Dzsudzsak doesn’t really fill a big need for us—I won’t play that broken record about how we need a defender and a holding midfielder again because you’ve already heard it—but if Wenger believes he can play at this level and can get a good deal for him, I can’t see how it’s a bad thing.

Carlos Vela is recovering from an ankle injury picked up in the Mexico-United States game, apparently. It doesn’t appear to be that serious and he will hopefully be back in action soon. There are also reports, though, that Vela may be headed to Fulham on a season-long loan as part of a deal to bring Brede Hangeland to Arsenal. I have to say, I’m not wild about this idea. While my initial reaction was that Vela could use the first-team experience and it could be a good thing, after thinking about it I changed my mind. First of all, with Adebayor leaving and Wenger playing three men forward, Vela is going to get a fair share of first-team action this season, and I think we need him. After Vela, either Jay Simpson or Sanchez Watt are the next strikers on the depth chart, and both are substantially below Vela in terms of skill and quality. Furthermore, while “first-team action” is generally good, Fulham play such a different brand of football from Arsenal that I’m not sure it would help prepare him to play for Arsenal in the future—he wouldn’t be coming back for the ball or working an intricate passing game with his teammates, he’d be sprinting downfield every time Fulham got the ball trying to latch onto a long ball.

Vermaelen seems to be the toast of the town off of his two strong performances so far. In typical fashion, the media, which was telling us we would finish 5th before the season started, is now talking about how great we are. And Vermaelen has gone, in the span of a week, from an injury-plagued, unknown, untested youngster that Wenger was foolish to depend on, to “Arsenal’s Vidic”—one paper actually called him that. But he seems to be taking it in stride, giving a lot of credit to both Wenger and Gallas for helping him settle in. Hopefully he’ll keep a level head and keep working hard, because while he’s put in some solid performances so far, he’ll have to deal with Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Adebayor, Robinho, Ireland, and Tevez within the next few weeks, and that’s a tougher test than he’s had to face so far in his young career. I think he’s going to be a very good one, but let’s see how he does against elite competition before crowning him a world-class defender. It is nice, though, to see him getting on so well with Gallas so far, it’s a stark contrast to the obviously strained relationship between Gallas and Kolo Toure.

Finally, Arsenal have invited John Hartson, who is presently recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, to be present at next week’s Arsenal-Celtic match. Since he played the bulk of his career for the two clubs, it made sense and would have made for a nice moment, but Hartson has apparently declined the invitation, saying he doesn’t yet feel well enough to travel and attend. Hartson does say that he’s feeling better, though, and that is strength is slowly coming back. Hang in there, Big John, we’re thinking about you.

Just last Friday, or about that time, I read a report that Milan would sign Cesc by Monday of this week. I’m starting to disbelieve any of that stuff, at least for now. I do think he’ll be sold in the next 2 years though. Just based on our recent history.

In other news… I think a loan of Vela in exchange for getting Hangeland would be great. I hear what you’re saying about it leaving us thin at striker. But I have a different take. I would call our current formation a 4-3-2-1, with the 2 being wide attacking midfielders. I count 6 players who would play in one of those positions, or as a lone striker. They are Nasri, Walcott, Arshavin, Eduardo, Bendtner, and van Persie. Possibly we could add that Hungarian guy too. So I say loan out Vela, give him some quality time to work, and get a full transfer of a key position. We’ll be needing a guy like that before the season is up. Even if there’s no major injury issue, we’ll need to rotate to stay fresh. Then next year, we’d get a more experienced Vela back, and still have Hangeland. What’s not to like?

Fabregas to Barca-I dont worry about this. This is the 147the rumour about Cesc going to Barca,Real or Milan this summer. Also Martin,Dont be suprised if there is no denial about this.I think that Wenger and Cesc and all Arsenal fans are tired about all this.It is really boring and stupid to read every second day about Cesc going to Barca. Why would Cesc repeat every day something that he said already 100 times this season?CESC IS STAYING.

Dzsudzsak to Arsenal-I watched him just one time(the last game against PSV)He played very well and scored two goals(both FK goals) and I think he had one assist. But that is just one match.Still I think that he wouldnt be a bad signing and would add some depth to our squad. But I dont think that will happen. There is a 25% chance that he will come. :D

Carlos Vela to Fulham-I read this rumour about 1 month ago and then we were still interested in Chamakh so now when the Chamakh saga is over we really need Vela at the bench so this probably wont happen. But still I would go after Brede cause I think we really need a CB.And also Martin,Wenger could everyone adapt on our football style,LOL.

Vermaelan looks like a great signing for us and I am happy that Gallas is helping him to settle in cause the relationship betwen the CBs must be good if we wont to win something this season.Remember the Gallas-Toure story

Really bad thing what happened to Hartson, hope he gets fit.

I think Vela earned the right to be in the 1st team, but I am no expert and AW knows better, still I d love to see him stay and score goals like last seasons cuo ones and Mexico qualifiers on the EPL.
I recently read an analyze about him in a (yes, Mexican) magazie, and the guy seemed not only talented but emotionally intelligent (and that’s something that counts for a big game).

Man I hope that Barca have other players to buy, and they leave Cesc alone, Jesus it is starting to be annoying!!

At least our capt is also intelligent and has not allowed these rumours to get into his performance (fingers crossed, knock on wood, yes I am superstitious regarding our team).

The PSV guy, well Martin said it, no more talk about the HMF but then again AW still know better.

Great thing about Vermaelen, I saw his comments, and it is good to know the man is kind of humble.

Is Arsenal really on the brink of achieving “great things”? Yes they looked awesome against Everton. I love their young players but they needed a TON of luck to get that win against mediocre Celtic yesterday.

    quakesin2kNever–

Celtic home European matches over last several years:

    2008-2009:
    Celtic 1-Manchester United 1
    Celtic 2-Villareal 0
    Celtic 0-Aalborg 0

    2007-2008:
    Celtic 1-Spartak Moscow 1
    Celtic 1-Benfica 0
    Celtic 2-AC Milan 1
    Celtic 2-Shakhtar Donetsk 1
    Celtic 2-Barcelona 3

    2006-2007:
    Celtic 3-Benfica 0
    Celtic 1-Copenhagen 0
    Celtic 1-Manchester United 0
    Celtic 0-AC Milan 0

    2005-2006:
    Celtic 4-Artmedia 0

So, over the previous 4 seasons in the Champions League, Celtic’s record at home is 8-4-1, with the sole loss coming to Barcelona, and wins over such giants as AC Milan and Manchester United. To diminish at all Arsenal’s 2-0 win at Celtic as “needing a ton of luck” or somehow not a very good win is completely underestimating how very difficult it is for a team to beat Celtic at Parkhead in European competition.

After yesterday’s win, I’m pretty confident Arsene will finally pull the trigger on another signing or two. 2 away goals means the tie is just about settled, which means access to the £20+ of TV money from the group stages. I think Arsenal were making sure they would get that money before they spent too much of the profit made from the Toure and Adebayor sale.

Think of it this way: when those two players were sold, Arsene knew we had to win a tricky tie, possibly against Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, or Celtic in order to make the group stages. Given Arsenal’s conservative financial track record, they wanted to make sure of the money before it was spent.

@Martin – Celtic is no pushover. That’s for sure. Though the SPL isn’t on par with the EPL/La Liga/etc, Celtic or Rangers could easily fit in with the EPL. The goals were odd, and a bit lucky for us, and unlucky for Boruc since he actually had good positioning but what can you do when all of a sudden the ball bounces off someone’s back in the complete opposite direction or an OG. Arsenal absolutely out played Celtic and dominated possession. That says a lot. While I don’t believe Celtic won possession in many of those other matches against ManU or AC Milan, they took advantage of every opportunity they had. That can’t be said for yesterday, our defense shut everything down. Almunia could have layed out a beach towel.

Concerning Dzsudzsak (I’m a Polish-American and even I’m having trouble saying that name.. I think its pronounced Je-ZOOD-zak), the Eredivise is a good league and they develop talent well there. Holland seems to train up young talent well. We don’t really need another winger, but if he has great potential, why not secure him up? If anything sign him and then loan him out to a low table team or the championship.

Basically goal.com said last week that AC Milan had bought Cesc and were going to parade him last Monday at the San Siro. Cesc will be here with us for at least this year. I think the Vela to Fulham would be a good idea. I just don’t see him playing enough this year. If we loan him out I think he will have a great year.

This had better not be true. Obviously, no sane Arsenal fan would ever want Cesc to leave the club. But a transfer fee of only 35m?!?!? are you kidding me? Thats about the same fee Liverpool got for Alonso, and not only is Cesc a better player than xabi he’s only 22 years old! Im not buying any of this crap

Just to give the view of a barca fan and a someone who has always been sympathetic to the Gunners. (as a proof I would mention the fact of being a proud member of an official Arsenal Jersey from Arsene’s First season, 1996 if I’m not mistaken).
Anyhow, Cesc to Barca is annoying for us as well and though there was definately some smoke, I believe this was only to make sure to him we want him once Xavi starts showing signs of decline (= the future). About a fee, I highly doubt we would have agreed one already, too many factors could influence the players value and either team might not be able to sell it to their respective audiences. Anyhow, expect this to come up every transferperiod, it sells papers so it will be written till the end of his “gunner” career.

Vermaelen is known as a modest guy, so don’t expect him to loose his head. But rightfully pointed out above: he has not seen the big guns yet(rooney, drogba,…). Hope Arsenal buys another Defensive Midfielder and preferable another good CB and maybe a little steal like Van Der Vaart on the cheap. If so I believe you will be contending for the EPL.
