Van Persie Strong, Ljungberg “Weak”, Hulk Smash
By: Trent | August 5th, 2007
I think that Robin van Persie is not going to shy away from what will have to be his increased importance to the Gunners this year. First was his timely 87th minute goal against Ajax this past Saturday, which gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory and the Amsterdam Tournament trophy.
Then he gets crocked at the end of the match by a wayward elbow, gets stretchered off, but manages to return to the pitch to accept the spoils with his teammates.
To cap off the weekend, RvP lays into West Ham man Freddie Ljungberg, despite the Swede’s international sex symbol status.
You may recall that after completing his transfer to Upton Park, Ljungberg wasn’t entirely kind to his old club, suggesting, let’s say, that the brass wasn’t doing enough to keep the club competitive. He also intimated that the club had made certain promises to him and others that were not kept. This, you might imagine, rubbed some folks the wrong way.
In response to Freddie comments, Van Persie fired back:
“I was disappointed and a few others were as well. If you’re coming up with excuses about Thierry’s departure and promises from the club it’s weak. He had a fantastic period here, so say nice things. He was once the best player in England. If you play nine years at a club like Arsenal you can say some nice words.”
RVP knows how to be true to your school.
And now, his goal against Ajax:

Hm..I won’t say he’s nothing, but you’re right abt his recent form. I’m not gonna criticise him though, he’s given us 9 seasons and was instrumental in our double in 2001-02. All the best Freddie! just wish that all our players don’t diss us when they leave us though, it’s really a shame.

[...] Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League win against Steaua Bucharest, is, let us say, an unusually confident fellow in most situations. And true to form, the Dutchman says he saw the Gunners’ fast start coming [...]
