Villareal 1-1 Arsenal: Game Highlights

By: travis | April 7th, 2009

My goodness the internet is a lovely thing. Less than two hours after the conclusion of the game, I can bring you the highlights via 101 greatgoals.

Gut reaction? Lucky to escape with a draw. Good to get the away goal. Big game next week.

I guess I still see a lot of things to worry about. My first thought would be to rest a lot of the key guys against Wigan, because the next 3 games are the 2nd leg of the CL, the FA Cup Semi against Chelsea, and then a road game against Liverpool. So if Gallas and Almunia are out a while, and RVP and Eduardo are still hurt, then I see very limited options in this key stretch. Then I look at Villa’s schedule for the rest of the season, and it’s soooo easy. So even the 6 point lead isn’t safe with a lot of games coming up and 3 of the league games against the top 3 teams. I really want some silverware this year, but I still want to watch our back a bit in the league.
If there’s any good news from the day, it’s that Man Utd might be in trouble. So it might be a somewhat easier road to the CL Final, if everything goes just right.

What a steal, thanks Gunners for standing strong together.
    That was a close call.
Another fantastic performance by the quiet one Alexandre Song, and our backup goalie, not folding under tremendous pressure by Villareal. Needless to say about the lasor accuracy pass of the captain or the amazing finish of Ade, but I thought that CESC was leaving too much of a gap in the middle of the field and Villa real seemed to be dominating the half line. Ade was OFFSIDE too many times, he doesn’t anticipate enough and seems to be waiting for the pass rather than going towards the pass. Nasri came alive in the second half, but this guy should be more in the middle than to the left cause that’s when he can deliver major damage with his long range strikes.
No doubt we got a lucky away draw, now let’s hope Wenger can decisively win this at home and get ready for PORTO!

I’m not so sure I would say it was “lucky,” given that we dominated the action for most of the second half. Of course, we also could have given up more than one goal in the first half, so maybe that’s fair.

Bottom line is that we gave up a horrific goal, lost two starters to injury in the first half, and still managed to get the away goal for a draw. Now we get the second leg at home against a team that’s been pretty woeful away from El Madrigal all season. I think this is a result we should feel pretty good about, and chances are pretty good right now that we can beat Villareal at home and move on to the semis.

Also, what a goal by Adebayor. It almost made me pee in my pants a little bit.

i hope Wenger rests RVP and other key players against wigan, although I think they are a tough team at home but we can manage to beat them, because we some really crucial games villareal, chelsea, and liverpool. Hope we win them all.

MoMoney: Arsenal ain’t Panathinaikos. Just sayin’.
Ok, you’re right… still a lot of work to do, and we can’t rest easy now. But getting a win in Greece is a little easier, nonetheless.

Cesc and Ade, a great pair, great combination, even greater control and goal, greatest pass….
Work is done, I expected a win, but a draw with one goal is fine,
We need to be careful and more performants home!
    Go gunners!!!!!!
