Voting Time at the Arsenal Offside

In case you haven’t noticed, there isn’t always a whole lot for us to blog about on a regular basis. The preseason tour doesn’t begin for a few more weeks, nothing of substance has officially happened in the transfer window yet, and the regular season is still over a month and a half away. But since we’re new and still trying to make a go of it, we’re doing the best we can to deliver fresh content.

When the new blogging team was assembled a couple weeks ago, Brenton gave us a tutorial on how to handle the technical side of blogging. Things like uploading photos, videos, links, etc. So today I decided to experiment with some polls on polldaddy.com. At least it’s more fun than reading about a lower division team partying in Vegas because they got a result off Arsenal in the FA Cup. Hopefully these polls will turn out the way I hope on the technical side, and will give us something to debate for a few days.

We’re still hoping for some actual transfer news in the next week. It’s been promised. But we’re not going to do an official “Welcome to Arsenal” sort of blog on anyone until it actually becomes official, lest haply we end up with egg on our faces. And nobody wants that. So until then, you’ll have to wait for the international man of mystery. Now, without any further Adu, Freddy, here are some polls to consider:

Clichy always seems to be the guy raising his hand looking for the offsides call when HE IS THE ONE KEEPING THE PLAYER ONSIDE!!!!  I must have seen the 4-5 times at least this season that resulted in goals for our opponents.  I just wish Gibbs looked better than it would be an easy decision.

  • Sun and Mail have us bidding 18m pounds for Juan Mata. I would take that.

And in more frustrating news, apparently we haven't even placed a bid for Gervinho yet.

  • I'd take Mata over Gervinho any day of the week..

  • Anyone see the piece about Song being fined for sitting in Eto'o's seat? I know the French were the laughingstock of international football last year, but some African federations are absolutely ridiculous.

  • Homey_Mills

Any chance this will keep Song out of the African Cup of Nations?  That wouldn't hurt my feelings.

  • Ah, nice. Here's hoping, for our sake, though I know how much it matters to players.

  • raazu

i don't wanna see this season AW to buy over rated players to compete Chelsea and Man utd and hope Man city are also going stronger this season..I really want AW buy some serious good Striker like benzema and in defender Samba and Cahill if clichy  left go for vertonghen or Baines.....

  • Andylowe14

why benzema?? i never rated him that highly.. plus we have a serious striker in rvp, 18 goals in 19 starts second half of the season! ..if he was at another club we would be saying "thats the sort of player we need to buy.."

i think defenders is more of a priority, and keeping shcezchny (sic) in net, our decline at the end of last season coincided with his injury, lets hope he doesnt have to sit out much next season cos with him in goal we looked much better and i felt less nervous about our defence.

  • The easy answer to that is, RVP is likely to stub his toe at any moment, leading to 8months out again. You never know when it's gonna happen again, but you do know it will.

  • Colombian Gunner

Best thing to know is that most of us still support Wenger no matter what, I think despite the lack of trophies, we still enjoy watching Arsenal play football...
In the question why we didn´t win a thing in the last couple of seasons, I dont know if there´s an answer close to "We think we win games just for being in an Arsenal uniform, taking many things for granted and not fighting for it"

  • Just heard Tim Howard he "launched a foul-mouthed tirade" against the CONCACAF? What's up with him?

  • Shipped 4 goals, was pissed off and shouldn't have spoken to the media while upset. It was the CONCACAF Gold Cup, not the US Cup, Dear Tim, and most countries taking part speak Spanish, so shut up.

  • Couldn't they just do it like they do with the Champions League or Europa League? A bilingual presentation? Although the majority of the audience was Spanish speaking, minorities should be respected. Especially if said minority made up half of the spectacle that was the final.

  • Yah, that would have made the most sense. But then, it was a tv announcer that was doing it, and we all know how smart they are.

  • He's 100% right though that if the US had won it in Mexico City, they wouldn't have switched the ceremony to English. Definitely a CONCACAF double-standard in favor of the Spanish-speaking countries.

  • For reference:

"CONCACAF should be ashamed of themselves," Howard told the Sporting News after the match. "I think it was a [expletive] disgrace that the entire post-match ceremony was in Spanish. You can bet your [butt] if we were in Mexico City, it wouldn't all be in English."

Tim, the audience in your own country were mostly Mexican. The post-match ceremony was directed at the audience. If it were held in Mexico City, the audience would also be... wait for it... Mexican!

  • Sometimes practicalities get in the way of perfection, or some such nonsense. The audience is Spanish, so speak Spanish. I know, what a wild idea. And I'm not sure that if the US had won in Mexico that they wouldn't have announced some portion in English.

  • Homey_Mills

Well, what I'm more curious about is whether anyone laughed at any of my jokes.  I mean, "without any futher Adu, Freddy"?  That's gold, Jerry, gold!

  • That's the sort of thing Letterman would say on Late Night, isn't it?

  • Don't try to defuse or diffuse this tense situation with your childish humour.

  • Homey_Mills

It was either talk up my childish humor, or run the risk of getting all political in my comment.  So I took the easier path.

  • Fair enough. But you don't want to get between The Martin and me when it comes to Mexican-American relations. I've spent too much time in American prisons, cabron.

    And it's huumuour.

  • Homey_Mills

It's ok.  Apparently, about 48% of our readers don't know who the Martin is anyway.  Wow, how soon they forget.

  • Not Sairax, though. I can't count how many emails we've received clamouuuring for her return.

In 2007-2008, I honestly don't think Clichy made a mistake in any of EPL games i watched him in. It was amazing. He was perfect. He was the best LB in the world in my opinion. And every year it's just gotten a little bit worse... He's only 25, crazy i know, seems like he's been here forever, but it's sad to say, he's not much better if any than Leighton Baines. I wouldn't sell him just to sell him, but if he won't resign, Leighton or Gibbs isn't that much of a step down, if any at all.

  • Homey_Mills

For me to try to answer my own poll questions, the Clichy question was the hardest for me by far.  I think I'd lean toward trying to bring him back though, given the fact we'd be unlikely to spend big on a replacement.

  • Clichy. What happened? I can't imagine picking him over Evra or Abidal, but a couple of years ago he looked like he was their equal at times.

  • Arshavin arrived mate. Clichy left exposed without him tracking back, disrupts his natural game. He was much better with Nasri, but for me he has to go because he has no final ball into the box - and thats criminal if you're an attacking LWB.
