West Brom Thread

By: Martin | September 22nd, 2009

I know it’s the Carling Cup, but, you know, it’s Arsenal, and maybe you’re looking for an excuse to waste time at work. That’s what I’m here for.

Arsenal: Starters: Szczesny, Gilbert, Silvestre, Senderos, Gibbs, Wilshere, Coquelin, Ramsey, Traore, Watt, Sunu Bench: Shea, Bartley, Eastmond, Randall, Barazite, Frimpong, Vela

West Brom: Starters: Kiely, Barnett, Zuiverloon, Olsson, Jara, Thomas, Teixiera, Korren, Dorrans, Moore, Cox Bench: Carson, Meite, Martis, Mulunbu, Bednar, Reid, Woods

Interesting that Vela starts on the bench. I have to think this means he’s just recovering to health, and probably isn’t 100% match fit yet. Anyway, we haven’t lost at home in this competition in quite some time, so hopefully the youngsters can pass a big test tonight. As far as I know, the game is not being televised live here in the States, although there’s probably a thread of it out there somewhere.

Come on Arsenal.

(UPDATE: 2-0 Arsenal, with goals from Watt and Vela. Onto the next round. Since it’s the Carling Cup and I didn’t see it, I won’t be doing a formal recap or ratings. I’ll probably drop back in with any mid-week news, and will definitely be back on Friday with a Fulham preview.)

No coverage of this game anywhere by the looks of things. And people wonder why the Carling Cup isn’t taken seriously by teams or fans….

Ugh. Yeah, the best thing I could find is a running commentary:

Thanks Martin, I guess that’s better than nothing. There’s also a similar service at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/league_cup/8256834.stm – seems a little better written. Think I’ll give it a miss and just wait for the result.

Didn’t see it, obviously, but Jerome Thomas from West Brom was sent off in the 37th minute. Still tied, but we’ll play the rest of the match up a man.

Vela on as a sub in the 58th minute. Hopefully he’s not too rusty to pull off a moment of magic.

Goal, Arsenal. 1-0. Sanchez Watt scores on his senior team debut. He looked impressive in the preseason friendlies, and keeps it up. Barazite comes on for Traore in our third and last substitution.

And Vela nabs a goal on his season debut to make it 2-0 in the 75th minute. Barring something catastrophic, Arsenal is moving on to the next round.

Vela got his goal but that lob from Randall was just insane.

I have to admit I’ve never even heard of 2 of the guys in our starting lineup today. But it’s good to get a win and let the young guys get more playing time. Also good to see Senderos getting some time too.
