West Ham 2-Arsenal 2
By: Martin | October 25th, 2009Oof. This one stings. Remember when I said that the midweek draw against AZ would be a good thing because it would teach players a lesson about taking other teams seriously and finishing off games? I guess now it’s fair to say that the team did not learn either of those lessons. We had this game in hand, and then we let up, got sloppy, and dropped 2 points as a consequence. It doesn’t get much more frustrating than this.
We started well early when Sagna put a perfect ball into the box (I know, I was surprised, too), West Ham keeper Green only got fingertips to it, and van Persie just had to put the ball into an open net. We continued to dictate play in the first half, and when Gallas got a firm head on a header in the 37th minute. 2-0 Arsenal, which was the score at halftime. We seemed to be well on our way. We look pretty strong after the break, but couldn’t find a third goal. And then, in the 74th minute, Mannone couldn’t hang onto a free kick into the box, and he parried it directly onto the head of Carlton Cole, who put it into the net. Then, just a few minutes later, the referee awarded a penalty when Song was (harshly, it has to be said) adjudged to have tripped Cole in the box. Diamanti buried the penalty, and suddenly it was 2-2. Despite Scott Parker being sent off and the introduction of Bendtner and Eduardo, Arsenal couldn’t find a way through, and we let two points slip through our fingers.
I don’t want to phrase anything too strongly so soon after the game, but the bottom line is that championship clubs don’t blow 2-0 leads to inferior clubs. This was a problem for us last season, and after the first two games, you’d have to say it appears to be a problem this season as well. We either have a lack of leadership or a lack of mental focus (or both), but we’ve got to develop a little bit more of a killer instinct when we’re in these situations. Instead of getting hungry for the win and finishing off the game, we consistently let our foot off the gas pedal, and it has cost us on numerous occasions now.
On to the ratings:
Mannone 5.5. Bad game for the Godfather–his tenure as #1 keeper may be at an end. Nothing he could have done about the penalty, but should have held the free kick on the first goal–instead, he deflected it directly to Carlton Cole.
Sagna 7.5. Excuse me, waiter? This crow is a little overcooked. As much stick as I’ve given Sagna for how bad his crosses into the box have been, it’s only fair that I give him credit for his perfect ball into the box for the first goal.
Clichy 6.5.Got forward a fair amount, but never really put West Ham in much danger from the left.
Vermaelen 6.5. Pretty quiet game for TV5.
Gallas 7.5. Got up and headed the ball brilliantly for the second goal, and generally defended well, although he was a bit sloppy on a tackle in the box on Scott Parker, which could have been a penalty.
Song 5. Decent performance up until the penalty. You can argue that it shouldn’t have been given (and you’d be right), but the bottom line is that up a goal that late in the game you have to be careful not to even give the appearance of an illegal tackle in the box.
Diaby 5.5. Completely ineffective.
Cesc 6.5. Made a few good passes and had a brilliant shot which just missed, but could have been better.
Eboue 5.5. Reverted to the Eboue of last season. Wasteful in possession, sloppy in defense.
Arshavin 6. Popped up here and there, but didn’t create chances like he should be doing. Has to do better if Arsenal are to compete for trophies.
van Persie 8. Man of the match. Coolly took the first goal, assisted on the second, and could have had another goal late but for a brilliant save by Green.
Bendtner 6. Looked up for it, but couldn’t really make an impact. Also, it was weird to me that he seemed to be playing on the left wing, but maybe he was just coming too far back.
Eduardo came on, but it was too late to fairly rate him.
Wenger’s Tie 6.5 Solid.
Well, that’s it. We should have won, but we didn’t. We’re up to third place, with a game in hand, but this is one of those games where you just get the sinking feeling we’d really like to have those two points late in the season. But what’s done is done, and we’ve got to look forward. The youngsters square off against Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, and then the first-team is back in action in the North London derby against Spurs on Saturday. One can only hope we have now finally learned a lesson and will make sure not to blow three late leads in a row.

This is a bad bad result. I thought we were beyond this but I guess not. We had a chance to go top of the table (with the 3 points from the game in hand which is obviously never guaranteed…) but we blew it. Bad way to lose. Don’t like the laziness that seems to always creep in towards the end of games…

I did not see the game. I wonder who is in second place? (Chelsea? Manchester City? ) I believe in first place it is undeniably Manchester United. Well, it was a bad week for all the big team except for Liverpool.

I don’t know, Chelsea is in first place by a point, and has been playing very well lately. I was skeptical coming into the season b/c I didn’t believe in Ancelotti and thought they were too old, but 1/4 of the way through the season, they look like the team to beat to me.

i vote for more focus…since a while now,
did not see it and sticking to the superstition, at least we havent lost yet
i think chelsea looks stronger than ever, i did not bt for them cause i thought they aged, but apparently i was wrong, and carletto is uust being his usual good coach in a good team, bad combination for our title race, but if we want to win we have to bat!, and after all, focusing and being convinced that we will win is the attitude,Posted from

Lack of concentration is going to lose us the league this year. We were cruising and this should have been a win we had done the hard bit. Chelsea are the strongest team in the league just now apart from ourselves and we can definitely compete with them if we don’t drop silly points like this

I can’t believe how we pissed away that lead. 1) We are too satisfied with letting teams hold possession. 2) When we got the ball in a good position last night, we were content with passing it around and letting West Ham run, rather than pressing the advantage, being aggressive, and quickly scoring. Too many times we went from 3 on 3 situations (approximately) to passing it back to Vermaelen/Gallas/Mannone. 3) That is, we look so freaking negative. 4) We need more speed of play. If you compiled the instances of one-touch play in this game, you may have one minute of video. Too much hesitation on the ball from everyone, and I seldom see running on the ball.
I couldn’t believe the post you put up the other day about Mannone, Martin. You were clear to point out that he may not be our starting keeper, but I couldn’t believe that you said he had even one solid performance since the “Vito Mannone Show” at Fulham. In every game since then, (except Alkmaar, which I haven’t finished watching, only the first half on Arsenal TV) he’s made at least one mistake that’s resulted in a goal. Totally unacceptable.

I think one of the more worrying things about this is not so much that we drew instead of winning, or even the manner in which we dropped the points, but rather that we pulled the same stunt two games in a row.
And on top of that, this is right around the time things started going sour in the league for us last year. After 9 league games last season, we had 6 wins, a draw, and 2 losses — exactly the same as we do this season. In the subsequent 5 games last season, we lost 3, drew 1, and lost 1. So I think this is when we find out whether we’ll be challenging for the title this season or not.
It’s a long season with 4 competitions, and there’s a lot to do, and in the end all the players are human and will waver a bit. Which I’m perfectly fine with and even expect. What remains to be seen — and what we couldn’t do last year — is an ability to rebound after a game or two of lapsed concentration.
A competetive game against ‘Pool in the league cup, a win vs Sp*rs, and a win vs AZ would go a long way to convincing the fans, players, and media critics that this year’s side will take home some silverware.
Actually scratch the critics. They still think we’re finishing 7th after Sp*urs, Citeh, and Villa.

Agree with you Vespo, this is the crucial time to show what we re made of, like last year, this was the time when we dropped a lot of points.
Aside from critics, I have to say that this hurts: seeing all the pub on fox Lat Am, espn, some Spanish and French mags, and even some Lat Am shows and mags WITHOUT THE GUNNERS, I mean, until 2008 we were always a team to be seen, expected, feared etc, all the pubs advertising games and cups, had a big shot of gunners scoring, celebrating, challenging, and then maybe just one or two, or none! a silly fact, but that says we have to shut them all up and win something this year.
I even saw a stupid analyse by a stupid Spanish mag, saying that we were not title racers to the UCL, but “always competitors”, man, a few years back we were always considered a title contender!Posted from
