What Now Mr. Wenger?

By: travis | November 20th, 2008

An interview came out today with captain William Gallas and it’s far from good news. This isn’t the kind of bold leadership this young squad is in need of at the moment. How does he expect players to respond to criticism from a player who hasn’t shown the consistent mettle you’d expect from a captain? His words seem like they are too little too late in terms of firing anyone up. They strike me as desperate words from someone anxious to blame others:

“We have to understand that to be champions, you have to play big matches every weekend and fight. We are coming up against teams who are not scared to play football against us, who are not scared to take us on at our place, and this is becoming dangerous for Arsenal.”

They aren’t scared to play football against a team who has a captain that comes across as bitter, a party animal, and a sulking wimp – see Birmingham last season. But the blame shouldn’t fall simply on Gallas’ shoulders. If what he says is true, and I guess I may believe 50% or less of what he says, then there are some serious problems that this team, and specifically Arsene needs to address. I get the feeling that the words from Gallas do more to undermine than they do to fire up. He has failed to be consistent in his criticism and his praise – at least it seems like that way from my blogger’s perspective.

To me the pressure should be on Wenger’s shoulders. He is the one who refuses to buy, who has faith in these youngsters. He should be given some slack thanks to some injuries and other problems that haven’t been his fault, but the fact of the matter is, it’s sink or swim time. Four points in four games isn’t good enough, and it feels like anyone can win at the Emirates – see Villa and Hull City. A big, big game is on tap for this weekend. Let’s see what the boss can do.

hey Vincent, I was just wondering your opinion on Fabregas. Do you think he’ll leave at the end of the season? Or will it depend on how Arsenal go?
