Where’s Indiana Jones When You Need Him?
By: Trent | June 20th, 2007
Calm down, everybody. Arsene Wenger did not pull Peter Hill-Wood’s still-beating heart from his chest in order to appease the ghost of Herbert Chapman. Instead, some contractors have found some mysterious remains at Highbury, which may just prove a bit of Arsenal folklore to be true.
As you know, after the move to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s former ground at Highbury was to be converted into apartments and the like for sale to the public. Recently, excavation at the site has turned up a couple of horseshoes and some old timber. So, you ask, Why all the fuss?
It’s long been thought that during the original 1913 construction of Highbury a horse and the wagon it was pulling fell to its demise into a pit over which the North Stand eventually sat. No proof was ever found, including during the 1993 renovation of the stadium.
But now, the tell-tale horseshoes and cart remains have breathed new life into the story. I think that Bushie the Squirrel could sense the horse’s ethereal presence during the semifinals of the 2006 Champions League. And I think Tommy Smythe would back me up on that.
But he real meat of the story, from my perspective, would be, What was the horse’s name? Any guesses?
