Will Adebayor Increase the Grease?

By: Trent | August 27th, 2007

emmanuel_adebayor.jpgWhich makes complete sense if you incorrectly think that ‘grease’ is slang for scoring goals. Putting that aside, Emmanuel Adebayor says that Arsenal will be fine in this post-Henry world.

Of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Man City, the Lad from Lomé sez:

“The boss told us to be patient and, in the end, we won with an amazing Fabregas goal. Maybe in the past our heads would have dropped after that missed penalty. But we believed in ourselves and know we can score at any moment. Thierry was one of the best players here, one of the best in the world. Yet now he has gone and we have to do the job without him. Now it is down to me, to Robin and Eduardo to score the goals. And we are all doing our best to strive for the League.”

Last season, Adebayor tallied 8 goals and 4 assists in 29 league matches. That’s about on par with his last two full seasons at Monaco.

If he stays fit, how many goals can Arsenal expect from him now that Thierry’s gone? I’m already on record as saying that Robin van Persie will make up the bulk of the scoring. But what about Adebayor? Will 10 goals be enough to have the club contending? Will we need 15?

I like Adebayor’s work rate and energy (tho he didn’t look fit on Saturday, he needs time to get back to his energetic self). But I just don’t believe he can provide more than a few goals per season. I think he’ll eventually be proven to be one of Wenger’s failures.

I do strongly believe Ade will be a good buy for Arsene, just a matter of time. He will score goals, i believe they are working on his legs physique and shooting skills. That done, we will see miracles from this man. he is the only Arsenal centre foward who can play alone at the moment (Van cannot), I think Brent can!!!

I remember Rio saying he had a tough time with Ade! please give him time.

    After all, Arsene knows!!!

The beauty of Henry was that he could be a one man attack or the playmaker. However, Henry never resorted to posting up as Adebayor does. Henry would draw out left and create space and go to goal or he would draw defenders and find the backpost. None of the current crop of Arsenal strikers are dynamic enough to be as effective as Henry. Unexpectedly, the only player who has been able to create in and around the box, is Hleb. The same kind of dynamism could be said for Pires and Ljungberg. They just seemed to be more effective on the attack.

Drasta: I agree with Hleb’s unexpected improvement from last year. Very impressive thus far.
