William Gallas Is Just Like You and Me

We sports fans, even those of us who are ostensibly grown men, have a tendency to make our favorite athletes out to be larger than life. Different, somehow, then the rest of us who show up to a job we may or may not like every day and feel underpaid and underappreciated. So it is nice, on occasion, when we discover that an athlete is still a person, that he hasn’t forgotten where he came from, and that he is, perhaps, in his own way, not so different than you and I.

And then there are those occasions when you find out that an athlete spent $535,000 on a fugly-ass chrome monstrosity of a car, more than many people who work hard will make in their entire life, and you want to hit somebody. This is one of those times, and it’s William Gallas’ car:

I kid. Kind of. Athletes make a lot of money because there are very, very few people in the world that can do what they do. And very, very few people in the world can play center back as well as William Gallas, as Mikael Silvestre proved this spring. So he makes a lot of money, he can spend it how he wants–he doesn’t have any duty to be restrained or thrifty, although in these tough economic times there are surely better, less tacky uses for one’s money than this thing.

I guess what offends me most is how butt-ugly this is. Seriously, it looks like Robocop banged a Transformer and had this hideous offspring. Hopefully it won’t get dinged up in the Chunnel this summer when he heads on to Paris St. Germain.
