William Gallas is the Captain of Arsenal
By: Trent | August 10th, 2007
Wow. I really though that the Boss had already settled on Gilberto for the armband. But it is so: William Gallas will serve as captain of the Arsenal for the 2007-2008 season.
Furthermore, Gilberto won’t likely appear for the Gunners until September, as a result of having played late into the summer in the Copa America.
So…as I’m still traveling, posting is light, but…what do you guys think of the decision?

Well, he’s French, duh.

Rubbish. I sort of understand why he did it though, especially one of Gallas’ discomposure. There’s no doubt the Frenchman is talented, but tends to let the little things get to him. Wenger is probably hoping that this will give Gallas the confidence to become a more consistent, dignified leader.
I would have still given it to Gilberto, even if he doesn’t return until September. Then Wenger could have used the armband strategically to give to certain players who he might feel need a boost of importance going into matches.
Ultimately though, I doubt this decision will backfire. Gilberto is mature enough a man to know he is the team’s true leader and I don’t see Kolo throwing much of a fit and it might just motivate him to play even harder.

Gilberto was really fantastic last season as captain. I dont know how Gallas even came into the fray. This is blatantly short sighted of Wenger and i hope this will not return to haunt us a few games into the season. The captain doesnt always have to be French – please!!!
And lets give Lehman another chance and hope he gets over this jekyll and hyde complex
