Wow. Brazil Crushes Argentina.
By: Trent | July 15th, 2007
Brazil are your Copa America 2007 champions, after beating Argentina 3-0. Who’d have thunk it to be such a beatdown?
From an Arsenal-interest perspective, Julio Baptista played well in subbing for the disqualified Gilberto Silva.
Does this change anyone’s thoughts on the tournament as a whole?

Well as a Brazilian who’s joined in the national criticism of Brazil’s dreadful football on offer at the tournament, I have very mixed feelings. I love the Argentine side and thought it was better for Brazil to lose so that we could reconsider our approach to out-Europeanize the Europeans. Still, I never enjoy seeing Brazil lose and I was shocked and impressed by how well Brazil performed. And how stunned and clueless Argentina were throughout the match. I loved seeing Baptista prove his worth – he’s actually been very good throughout this tournament. I always thought he just needed more time to adjust to the Prem, he’s a fine player. Not a Kaka or Ronaldinho, but he’s got an excellent eye for goal.
Still, I do not like the idea of Brazil becoming the new Italy: organized, efficient, clinical, disciplined, ruthless, relentless, utterly brutal — and only occasionally attractive. I DO welcome some of those qualities, but not the whole package. Meanwhile, traditionally conservative European powers like Italy and Germany are becoming more attacking sides, as we saw at last year’s wc.
As for the tournament itself, it was terrific, far better than the wc last year. Thanks to the Venezuelans for a great job.

Wow is right. What a shocker! I’m still firm on my stance that this has been a great Copa America, and this end was a thrilling and un-expected conclusion. I totally agree with most of what sandrhan said (but a Brazilian who loves an Argentine side? what?). It has been a little disapointing watching Brazil take a more defensive/counterattacking style of play. Still… they shut out a dominant Argentine squad with their physical play and lightning strikes. Credit where credit is due. And overall, it was not a boring match in the least. The Beast’s goal? Vagner Love’s throughball and Alvez’s strike? Magnificant.
Brazil pulled it together when it counted, and once again defeated their arch-rivals. The Copa America is over, and I need a cigarette.
