You Know the Season is Finally Here When Our Entire Squad is Injured

By: Martin | August 13th, 2009

Arsenal’s team doctor, pictured at right, has had a pretty busy summer. Unsurprisingly, before we’ve even played our first match, we’re beset by injuries to many key players.

Arsene Wenger has told the official website that:

“We have some problems. We have Theo Walcott (back), who is not available. Diaby has a little groin problem but he could be available. [Also] we have lost Johan Djourou and Lukasz Fabianksi because they had injuries. Lukasz had a cartilage surgery. He will be out for two months. Johan has a knee problem that will take some time to cure – one month. Thomas Vermaelen played 45 minutes for Belgium last night and came through OK so he will be available. Tomas Rosicky is two weeks away. Samir Nasri [is out] three-and-a-half weeks now. But it will be six or seven weeks until he is available for training.”

What. The. Frak. How have we lost six players before we’ve even played a game? And we’ve got Gallas fit, Vermaelen is “available,” and then after that, you’ve got Senderos, who’s unsettled and may not even dress against the team he will probably be playing for in a week or so, and then Silvestre. To make this point absolutely clear–IT’S THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, AND THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE SILVESTRE WILL BE STARTING AT CENTER BACK. NOT OKAY, WENGER. Not okay.

I hope Diaby can come through his “little groin problem.” Chin up, Abou–I hear size doesn’t matter. In all seriousness, this is pretty distressing. I’m not sure how we’ve got that many people injured, especially since we haven’t played all week. Ugh. I’ll get into this in tomorrow’s preview, but I think between the injuries and Vela flying back from Mexico, our options will be pretty limited, lineup-wise.

There’s a music biz joke that goes: Q: How do you know when Morrissey is on tour? A: When he’s cancelling shows.

I guess the football analogy would be: Q: How do you know it’s football season? A: When Arsene Wenger is having to piece together a patchwork lineup.

Sigh.

no offense but i would like to compare our situation with united rite now
-united suffer more injuries than us right now-nani,van der sar, obertan, rafael, brown, hargo, vidic, gary, foster but u dont see any worry from their camp for the starting game cos of the starters
    valencia replaces nani
kuszczak replace both van der sar n foster
fletcher cover hargo(even though hargo plays on the right)
    evans cover vidic
    n anyone can cover gary

ofcourse i may b wrong in the way there is a lot of diffrence between birmingham n everton
but my point here is just look at the depth quality united have-this depth quality is exactly what we need if we are to enjoy the success united enjoys under saf

now lets look at our injury to bench player
    walcott
    diaby
    djourou
    rosiscky
    fabianski

    n injuries to starter
    vermaelen
    nasri

n who do we have to cover-silvestre a joke,
a whole position is missing with walcott/nasri/rosiscky-a bigger joke -we cant rely on our depth cos they are injured too
so where united is all good (leaving the gk)arsenal has a glaring hole on the right n the centre defense-a position we are most fragile at seeing our lack of a proper dmf

why i compare us to united cos if we have to challenge for the title we have to match the best-which we are not for the time being

That’s pretty bad. You guys are challenging last season’s Real Madrid for number of players in the Doctor’s waiting room.

With this injurys I really dont know how the starting XI will look against Everton.
    Probably something like this:
    Almunia
    Sagna-Gallas-Silvestre-Clichy
    Vela/Ramsey-Cesc-Song-Arshavin
    RvP-Dudu/Nicklas
I would rather have Song on the CB and Denilson as DM then Silvstre. But you should look at this positive guys,Wenger isnt so stupid to not recognise our problem.I am sure that when Senderos leaves AW will buy a CD but we probably once again wont see a DM here.Because even if AW buys another player it would be a RM.Nasri is out for a long time,Rosicky,I dont need to explain this and that puts us with only Walcott. And for the DM AW still believes in Diaby,Song and Denilson.

As far as I can tell, Senderos is still an Arsenal player. So why wouldn’t he start in front of Silvestre on Saturday?

The boss said that vermaelen is not injured, he is fit, still i think silvestre will start. of course that is bad news.

Or maybe wenger could use the 4-3-3
    Almunia
    Sagna-Gallas-(Silvestre/but hopefully Vermaelen starts)-clichy
    Song-Denilson
    Fabregas
    V. Persie-(eduardo/bendtner)-arshavin

I think this is a better line up for the players we have now, but when the injured players are back i think we should go back to the 4-4-2

    Homey–

You’re right, but I could definitely see how since Senderos is apparently fairly close to agreeing to a move to join Everton, the boss might not want to play him on Saturday. You’re an attorney, you understand conflicts of interest :)

Have you thought about Bruno Alves as a possible signing?

he’s tall and has a very good aerial game. He’s strong and very physical hen he tries to get the ball. He’s 27 years old and has a lot of experience in the C.L. Finally, he seems reluctant to sign a new contract with Porto which may lead to his departure.

Arsenal might be considering to sign him as a direct replacement of Touré. I did not see him play a lot, but, from what I’ve heard, he’s tagged as a “hot property”.

Then, if we sign Bruno Alves, it would push Vermealen as a third defender an Djourou as our fourth. Wenger would ultimately sell Silvestre unless he is being used as a Dm.

yes vermaelen is doubtful to play on the 15th due to his hamstring problem,
personally i dont think wenger would go for alves
1.he already got an experienced cb in vermaelen
2.he would most probably go for a young one again simply cos he believes he has got a pairing in vermaelen n gallas and is looking for back up
3.dont forget his interview where he said he sold toure cos he had surplus cb,so going for an experienced one he will contradict his own logic -so worse we wont even get a cb-young or experinced.

n isnt it funny that the other gunners who left us are injured too
    toure-thigh injury
    adebayor-groin strain
seriously is their a legit injury curse on arsenal players??

    Gooner,
You have Song and Denilson as essentially wingers in your 4-3-3. Is that really what you want to see? I can’t envision either of them like that. I’d much rather see us in a 4-4-2.

Homey: Song would play in the middle of the 4-3-3 like Touré Yaya. He has improved a lot, but still need someone to cover up his lace or better,as we discuss, someone more experience t get his place.

temptest: I did not know that Wenger sold Touré because he had an excessive amount of CB. If it was the case, he should have sold Silvestre instead. So, I don’t take that excuse. Unless, he wanted much more money; something the sale of Touré would have provided.

third eye he said it in the interview in arsenal.com after one of the friendly-
“we have 7 cb right now n i have to play some of them out of position(think he is referring to song) n we will see what we conclude(toure was still with us at that time) within the next 24 hrs”

i think wenger thinks we have excessive cb n he sold the one which bought most profit

    temptest;
We have Djourou,Gallas,Senderos,Silvestre,Song, Vermaelen.Senderos will probably leave and Song will play as DM.That means we have 4 CBs.Djourou is injured and Vermaelen in not 100% fit.The only two who are available are Gallas and Silvestre(ugh…)Do you really think that Wenger is so stupid and let us down with Silvestre as starting CB?The interview was something like “everything is OK we dont need to buy because we have enough CBs”-What do you think if he said we desperetley need a CB and then tries to buy someone?Every club would ask more money then they will do it now after this interview.Wenger knows what hes doing.

I definitely rate our squad as talented footballers, but for Wenger to say there is no one better to bring in is a questionable to say the least. He is probably trying to encourage confidence from his team but seriously I see many potential midfield and defensive additions across Europe’s leagues, I just pray Wenger finds someone he likes and quickly!!!!

Silvestre is ok and did play ok for a short spell last year but I would definately feel a lot less nervous if he wasn’t on the pitch, even in his prime for Man Utd he was error proned at CB!

I wouldnt be suprised if Wilshere starts as RM against Everton.Walcott isnt available and Rosicky and Nasri are injured.
    Almunia
    Sagna-Gallas-Vermaelen-Clichy
    Wilshere-Song-Cesc-Arshavin
    RvP-Eduardo
    This isnt so bad. :D
What do you guys think, who will start as RM?
