‘Hopeless’ Arsenal Sign Eduardo da Silva

By: Trent | July 2nd, 2007

dasilva.jpgAny attempts to begin to replace Barcelona-bound Thierry Henry are all in vain, says long-time flopper Didier Drogba. The Ivorian reckons that Arsenal are already hopelessly out of next year’s title race. Despite this oracular pronouncement, Arsene Wenger has decided to try anyway.

So comes today’s announcement that the club have signed Brazilian-born Croatian forward Eduardo da Silva. In an odd turn, the Dinamo Zagreb man scored the first-ever competitive goal at the Emirates Stadium during last season’s Champions League.

In his twelve-match international career, Eduardo has netted seven goals. The Arsenal will need some more of that scoring rate next season.

Update: Eduardo on the transfer: “I am excited and happy in the same time, also very proud that I am going to play in such a big club. Every football player wants to play for Barcelona, Real [Madrid], Manchester United or Arsenal one day, and so do I.” Happy AND excited at the same time? What kind of an emotional contortionist is this guy?

You never know, he might just be the surprise signing of the year. Do you think he’ll start?

I wish they sought out Martins or Tevez first but i think De Silva will be a good signing. Him + RvP up front would be a very nice attacking combo I really think that Arsenal will have a strong squad next year baring no injuries to key players.

As he plays in the Croatian league I’ve never really seen him play so I did some youtube digging. Good news for you is that he’s got real good speed, dribbling ability, and instinctual finishing. Bad news is I was watching a compilation of about 20 or so goals he scored this season (scored 34 total) and almost all of them were either the result of GK errors or poor defending that he won’t come across in the EPL, or they were penalties or easy rebounds.

16 million pounds, reportedly. Does Arsene still know? We shall see

Wenger is a very smart football mind, so he sees something here, but its rather sad for Arsenal to see such a huge chunk of Henry’s transfer fee spent on an unknown quantity like Da Silva. 7.5 million seems high for him, but we’ll see.

Unfortunately, it is impossible today to get a decent striker on the cheap. You can count on one hand the amount of world class strikers, and none of them are coming to Arsenal because they’re too damned expensive. Don’t believe reports that Wenger spent the entire 16 mil he got for Henry, nor should you believe reports that Da Silva is intended as a direct replacement for Henry. It wouldn’t surprise me if this deal has been in the works for months, before Wenger even agreed to sell Henry.

Da Silva is the real deal — I’m hoping that he can adjust to the Prem more easily than other Latin players. He’s been playing in an Eastern European league for years now and they’re very physical and defensive.

Drogba is right, Arsenal are less than hopeless, they have NO chance of premiership, will be VERY LUCKY to qualify for champions league, let alone win it LOL!, and to be honest I don’t see them winning anything for the next 5 or 6 years. Fabregas and Wenger will leave, and Arsenal will be just another mid table club with a good past. Man U - Tevez, Liverpool - Torres, Arsenal - da silva, you see the pattern here?

I don’t about this one. Arsenal have always hit the bullseye when they signed flop players from other teams ( Tierry Henry, Anelka, Bergkamp etc etc )

Wenger has a tendency to bring out the best in players who have not performed well recently!

even if he isn’t a star performer nxt season arsenal still have a bright future with up an coming stars. It’s obvious that some of the comments are from United and Spurs fans and to you GET BENT. Spurs haven’t won anything for years and won’t for many more and united are all glory grabbing idiots and the most arrogant people in history!!!!
