Jens Crafters: Lehmann Set to Stay at Arsenal
By: Trent | April 26th, 2007
He may have shown some lapses last week. He may be half mad. He may, in fact, be targeted by the refs. But it looks as if German international Jens Lehmann will return to Ashburton Grove next season. As expected, the new contract extension is only for one year.
Where this leaves the goalkeeping situation for the furture is unclear. Backup Manuel Almunia had some nice moments in the Cup competitions this year, but it’s not clear that the club thinks he is a long-term answer once Jens does leave. It says here that Arsene Wenger has his heart set on Craig Gordon, of, um, Hearts.
In less verified players news…
Arsenal may also be in the potential race for Fiorentina striker Luca Toni. This comes on the heels of the Adriano rumours.
Also, the mill says that Real Madrid may redouble its efforts at luring away Cesc Fabregas.

Arsenal have form for this, remember the Seaman debacle.
I like the mad Kraut though.

I LOVE Mad Jens. It just doesn’t feel like Arsenal when he’s not playing. Even if it’s only for a year, it’s good that he’ll still be around.

Another year of the madness. It is interesting that he had little interest from clubs in Germany. I don’t think he would be elected dog catcher in that country. Do they even have elections for dog catcher?

I do love the Mad Monk but he’s just not as good as he used to be. He’s seemed to lost is concentration and will to play lately. He’s accepted the 1-year contract because he didn’t have much choice. No major club in Germany wanted him (not enuf to pay him what he wanted, that is) and Wenger wouldn’t offer him a contract for more than 1 year. In a way it’s good that he’s staying because the club is suffering from the loss of too many older experienced players in such a short amount of time. Maybe by the start of next season Jens will be more refreshed and ready to go. And hopefully Wenger’s recent criticisms of Jens will have sunk in. His antics made the team concede Keane’s goal last Saturday.

He’s too expensive, salary-wise, for the German teams (which says a lot about the Bundesliga right now), although apparently Hertha Berlin was going to try to lure him by having him start his coaching career by training his successor. They’re not a CL team, though, so I can see why he’d stay with Arsenal. Good thing he brings me such amusement…

When Jens stopped that penalty in the ‘06 Champions League semi final against Villareal, he found a place in my heart that had only been occupied by David Seaman’s wicked ponytail. I’m glad to know he’ll be back next season.
He’s been lacking focus lately because silverware is out of reach this campaign, although solidifying 4th place is important as well.
