Our midfielders are exiting quickly

By: travis | July 16th, 2008

The day where Alexander Hleb leaves the club may have finally arrived. He’s in Barcelona for a physical, and the deal will be done. Someone over at Setanta takes a look at the impact that Hleb has had at Arsenal. I’ll make a long story short: with him off the pitch, more goals were scored and more games won. Makes it hard to miss him. However, he’s 27, and one of the more senior players on this team that is really looking quite young. What’s an opening day midfield? Cesc, Nasri, Walcott, and Ramsey? Cesc, at 21 would be the oldest. I know that most likely won’t be the lineup, but my point is, last season without experience we couldn’t win (injuries also playing a big factor), so the response so far isn’t good in terms of bringing experience in. In Wenger we trust, I guess.

Other news sees Gilberto completing his transfer over to Greece. Best of luck to the player who I think we should try the most to keep, but he’s on his way out the door. The question is, who will be brought in as replacements – if anyone? The Barry rumors aren’t exactly rampant, but there is also a possibility of Xabi Alonso. And what about Adebayor? It’s either Barca or bust for him. Your thoughts, please.

    *hugs Arsenal*

I feel sorry for you, deeply.. :P

But hey, players leave, and you think it’s the end of the world, then Wenger brings out new players next year that make you go ‘wow’..

    Like Sagna.. :P

    No worries..

Flamini is a much bigger loss than Hleb. I’m still worried over that…

very poor by Arsene..as it is Arsenal was so depleted in last year’s title race..now they sell off Hleb, Flamini and possibly Gilberto and buy just one, Nasri in return yet?? I think he should have bought before his garage sale

we need barry big time, he will fill the void of that holding midfielder position perfectly, considering we lost gilberto and flamini

thats the only signing i really wanna see at the moment, or another similar player

nasri will be a fantastic replacement for alex hleb however, contrary to the stats, i believe hleb was a massive player for us over the past 3 years and was an integral part of wenger’s system and i believe he will be missed. Hleb brought more to arsenal than just assists and goals!! his tracking back, his dribbling, his accurate defence splitting passes etc. and in the majority of goals last season he always played a major part in the build up (indirectly if not directly).
hleb you will be missed but nasri will win fifa player of the year at least once in his career which is something hleb will never be able 2 do
