You Be the Captain / And I’ll Be No-One: Part the Second
By: Trent | July 27th, 2007
We’ve already broached the subject around here, and the answers in comments were one of two choices for the club’s next captain: Kolo Toure or Gilberto. But Arsene Wenger seems to be contemplating a name no one mentioned: William Gallas.
Yes, the same French defender who last week grumbled about the team’s transfer market inactivity.
Freshly-departed captain Thierry Henry hasn’t weighed in on who should wear the armband. However, he’s already started missing Tottenham, which is as you know one of the Kübler-Ross stages of grieving.
So–what do you think of Gallas as captain?
UPDATE: More here from the gaffer. Looks like it will be Gilberto, and when he’s not available, either Kolo or Gallas.
Also, as noted below in the comments, the international flair of the commenters themselves does, in fact, rock. Sweet!

Rubbish. He, like Toure, is too inconsistent.
It belongs to Gilberto. He is the leader of the team, he is the one who tends to step up when it’s needed.

Right now Gilberto should be no.1 no doubt. Toure comes second but Gallas? No way. He may be experienced but too much of those came in the coat of blue. i’d rather have it straped on Diaby The Dominator. (but i know cesc wouldnt like that too much.)

Well, if you look at what Wenger said, you’d see that he said Gallas had the qualities that made him able to be a captain and that was why he was captaining the Salzburg friendly. Which Gilberto wasn’t at and Kolo wasn’t supposed to play until Djourou pulled out at the last minute. So I don’t think that Gallas is really one of the candidates…

Well, Billy wont be our captain by any means!
What I think wenger is doing, being so clever in managing people can be explained in two theories:
1: May be he is looking to ship out Gilberto next season, to let Denilson, Diaby and Flamini fight for the place. So, he might be looking for a long time replacement.
2: Playing with the media and the players to say and give more respectively.
My choices are Gilberto and Toure.

Gilberto is the man for the job. Amongst the trio of Gilberto, Kolo Toure and Willy Gallas, Gilberto is the most consistent, Kolo Toure comes second. I think Gallas isn’t totally committed to the Gunners’ cause.

Kalakala- i like what all that u said bar the Gilberto being shipped of. Unlike our so called ‘Legends’ Viera, Henry a true Legend doesnt leave a club until they retire ala Dennis ‘The great’ Bergkamp (oh how i miss him). Gilberto is the captain and he is not going anywhere! Toure Second! Cesc God forbid coz they next time Madrid comes knocking in about 2 years he’s Gone in 60 Seconds. I like the diaby suggestion but after gilberto its Toure for Cap.

No contest! It’s Gilberto by a country mile and then Kolo for vice captain.
